Warwickshire Police were astonished when a driver in a Robin Reliant overtook them on 16 January.
The police pulled over the three-wheeled car on the 50mph-stretch of the A429 in Wellesbourne in Warwickshire.
The force’s Operational Patrol Unit (OPU) wrote on Facebook: “The driver of this vehicle, yes a three wheel Reliant Robin, overtook one of our unmarked cars on the A429 near Wellesbourne in excess of the posted speed limit.”
“We stopped the vehicle and reported the driver accordingly. What a Plonker.”
Many compared the incident to the Only Fools and Horses episode called “Dates”. In this episode, Rodney tries to outrun a gang of punks in a yellow Reliant on his date with Nervous Nerys and incidentally attracts notice of the police after accidentally overtaking them
The incident stirred up a lot of reaction on Facebook. One wrote: “Del boy would have been proud”.
A user in the comments questioned whether it was an April fools joke, despite it not being the first of April.
Another wrote: “If this thing overtook you, whatever the speed limit was, you just wouldn’t ever mention it. Ever.”
“It overtook you? Were you changing a flat tyre at the time?!” said another.
